Relationship between the development of feeding and speech

Scientific framework and objectives

Chewing and speech are two motor activities that emerge during the first year of life from mandibular rhythmic cycles. The fact that speech and nutrition activities depend on common anatomical and physiological structures and that feeding and language disorders coexist in some children (Malas et al., 2015) could explain the interaction between their development.

Our goal is to test experimentally the link, often assumed by clinicians, between the early development of feeding and speech. This study aims to investigate the evolution of temporal mandibular patterns for these two activities between 8 months and 14 months and to examine how these patterns interact during the development process. This work will be carried out in the context of Leslie Lemarchand's thesis.
