Brain oscillations during speech perception in children with developmental language disorders

Scientific framework and objectives

Recent EEG/MEG studies show an alignment of auditory cortical oscillations to speech (syllabic) rhythm (Gross et al., 2013; Peelle et al., 2013). This cortico-linguistic synchronization is thought to reflect the development of predictions on salient acoustic events, allowing optimal sensitivity in the listener and efficient information processing (Peelle & Davis, 2012). Besides, studies in children with developmental language disorders (DLD or previously SLI) suggest the existence of rhythmic processing deficits in these children, either to process acoustic rythmic cues (in non-verbal or verbal stimuli) or in tapping tasks (audio-motor synchronization; Corriveau et al., 2007, 2009). Their performance furthermore predict some of their linguistic skills.
We hypothesize that such difficulties may be related to atypical oscillatory functioning and in particular to a deficit of brain oscillations to align to the speech signal.
In our project (ODYSSEE project and H. Guiraud's PhD, 2013-2017), we aim at testing this hypothesis by:

  • examining the processing of speech naturally produced at various syllabic rates in children with DLD/SLI as compared to typically-developing children.
  • characterizing, using MEG, the underlying cortical oscillatory dynamics and more specifically brain alignment to syllabic rate.
