Oscillatory dynamics during speech perception in typically developing and SLI children

Scientific framework and objectives

Recent studies show an alignment of auditory cortical oscillations on speech rhythm. This cerebro-linguistic synchronization is thought to reflect the development of predictions on salient acoustic events, leading to optimal sensitivity in the listener and efficient information processing. Besides, models on speech perception suggest the existence of tight interactions between speech production and perception processes, with specific involvement of premotor cortex during degraded speech perception or the existence of speech perception deficits in children with articulatory deficits.
In this context and in the continuity of the ODYSSEE project, our aim (H. Guiraud's PhD) is to examine, using magnetoencephalography (MEG), the dynamics of cortical oscillations during speech perception (produced at a normal or rapid rate) in typically developing children and in children with speech output deficits. We will therefore be able to:

  • characterize the functional architecture of sensorimotor networks underlying speech perception in children,
  • determine whether and how this architecture is modified in speech output disorders,
  • determine if the oscillatory dynamics is affected similarly in typically and atypically developing children.
